Professional orders and associations

What are they?

Professional associations are mandated to represent the interests of their members. They are not legally empowered to regulate practices. Rather, they organize various activities and events to keep members informed about the latest trends and innovations.
E.g.: Société québécoise des professionnels en relations publiques

Professional orders adopt and enforce regulations and monitor quality to protect the public. They ensure that their members deliver high-quality services and respect the laws and code of ethics governing their profession. There are 45 professional orders in Quebec active in strategic sectors such as health care, engineering, and the sciences.
E.g.: Ordre des dentistes du Québec

Why should you join?

  • To establish a network of contacts
  • To keep up to date with changes in your field
  • To participate in exclusive conferences and seminars

If you are planning to pursue graduate studies (master’s degree or Ph.D.), membership in a professional order or association could be useful. Associating with experts will have a positive impact on your career and earn you professional recognition.
